Dear Friends and Supporters:
Karl was 17 when his father discovered he was gay and threw him out. A special-ed student, Karl’s below-normal IQ, speech, and memory problems made it even harder for him to survive on the streets. He wound up sleeping on the Christopher street piers during the day, when he felt safe, and walking the streets at night, when he did not. Luckily, one of our other residents met Karl and brought him to Sylvia’s Place, our emergency shelter for homeless LGBT youth. Now he has a safe place to live, is back in school, and is receiving support services.
Karl is just one of the more than two hundred youth who will pass through Sylvia’s Place this year, each with their own - often tragic – story and urgent needs. Whether in the middle of the crisis of their first homelessness or turning to us as a last resort while struggling with behavioral issues that have gotten them kicked out of place after place, Sylvia’s Place is frequently their only option. We accept LGBT youth on a walk-in basis, with or without paperwork, late at night or early in the morning, 365 days a year, with no waiting list and no questions asked.
When youth come to us, they get a full range of services, including hot meals, donated clothing, showers, laundry facilities, mental health and medical services, and help with resumes, school placement, and finding permanent housing.
But now I have to ask you to help us help them. Our funding is primarily from government sources, in the form of reimbursement contracts, which means that we have to spend the money up front and then wait to be reimbursed after the fiscal year ends. Due to bureaucratic obstacles, our reimbursement is delayed, and we need to raise $15,000 to keep our doors open until our government funds come through. Please help us to the best of your ability. All contributions are tax deductible. Checks should be payable to MCCNY/Homeless Youth Services and mailed to us at 446 W 36th St, NYC NY 10018.
Thanks so much for caring about our youth!
